why wont my 2001 dodge ram 1500 sport engage in shifting from park to drive or reverse

I was driving my pick up home and all of a suddent a loud whining noise started
and I lost power and to coast to curb while still running. My pick up would not
engage at any level p, n, r, or drive. Not sure why

Sounds like you don't have enough Transmission fluid or something in the Transmission broke. Have you checked the Trans fluid level?
