How can I get my trailer lights to work?

Asked by tiredofnotgettingtof... Aug 03, 2014 at 09:00 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I know I'm getting power, all 4 lights blink, the truck and the trailer, when a turn signal is put on. The running lights come on when the lights are turned on but all trailer lights go out when the brakes are applied.  What is wrong?

Is your white wire from trailer plug firmly attached to the trailer with a screw or bolted?

Sounds like you are loosing your ground or bad ground connection. (White wire) If trailer is old school wired without the white ground wire try applying a little grease on ball of truck to help complete the ground circuit.

Ok the brown is your running lights and the yellow and green are your turn signals and brakes. Are you using the proper bulbs? Dual element?

Might want to check the white on the truck side of the connection. If an aftermarket plug they might not have attached it properly to the truck frame.

Trailer lights worked fine when I had it connected to a Jeep Grand Cherokee, I'll try the white on the truck. The truck had fast flashed on the right turn signal but that has stopped on its oun.
