Boiling antifreeze and grinding noise

Asked by AlaskaRam Feb 10, 2011 at 09:45 PM about the 2000 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 5.9. Recently the heater started to blow cold air and the
gauge read very low! I was told to replace the thermostat and did. The heat seemed to work
for about 10 minutes, followed by a low grinding noise from the engine every so often with
cold air blowing. Under the hood it seems that antifreeze is leaking in mysterious spots
randomly as well as a bubbling noise in radiator! What is my next step to resolving this
issue?

sounds like you have lost your water pump -- take the serpentine belt loose and wiggle the fan around -- It should spin silently with no play. If it grinds or is hard to turn or has play -- you need to replace it -- also consider new hoses and radiator cap when you do it
