Dodge Ram 1500

Asked by marilyn_16 Nov 01, 2016 at 02:59 PM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT Quad Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our Ram 1500 will start no problem one day yet
the next nothing. The dash etc lights up so I
know the battery is good (we have also
changed batteries). When this happens the only
sound when the key is turned is a dull, hollow
clunk and then nothing. This can go on for days
and then we can go out on day and it will start
up like nothings wrong. When it does happen,
there is absolutely no starting it. ??????

Check battery voltage, should be 12.4vdc or take it to your local auto parts store for an inspection. If battery is good and still won't turn over, check all battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight

A lot of these dodges are having problems with the internal fuel pump relay located deep in the tipm box.. (fuse box .brain.under the hood right hand side)..it causes hard to start, to no start at all, or if stuck closed the fuel pump will run continuously with truck turned off and keys out of ignition, which drains your battery and burns out fuel pump....Google Vertical Verizon, they sell a test / bypass wire that will give you an answer for about 25 bucks or make one yourself.

my truck did the same thing I just threw a new starter on and tightened up my battery and cleaned my wire connection on the ignition and it fixed it

Don't replace anything without first troubleshooting or you'll end up spending a lot of money or parts that you don't need and still have the same issue
