Is the entire ignition removed or just the tumbler removed. The ignition has several connections that need to be connected for the engine to start and run correctly. Just turning the mechanism so the linkage will start engine will not work.it may start but might cause sensors to give false readings. You should be able to remove key cylinder/tumbler and leave ignition switch in column and turn with a flat head screw driver temporarily.
