How can I tell if a ball joint, o a tie rod is bad?

When driving, if the truck hits a bump in the road, it will
shimmied real bad.

Thank you mark. If its not the ball joints or tie rods, is there anything else I need to check?

make shure it is not the wheel berring as well I had mine do that over a year ago and it was the berring you can do them at home but difficult to do
