Help. 96 Dodge Ram 2wd Axle problems

Asked by Kris Sep 08, 2015 at 05:40 PM about the 1996 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 Ram 1500 and at any speeds
above 40 it feels like wheel is gonna fall off.
Have had tires balanced, jacked it up, put it
in gear, let tires spin and noticed wobble on
passenger side. Remove drum and can
move axle in and out about a 1/16 of an
inch with hands...what is the problem???
Axle shaft? Bearing? Something worse ???

if the wobble is up and down change the wheel berings and then take it for a road test.

No, wheel and tire is not out of round, wobble is not really up and down but side to side...so the play in and out on axle shaft IS normal ???

Its the CV joint front or back causing your trany were it meet the drive shaft to shak its only stabilized by one rubber mount and when you get going about 50 the wobble should be happing but if you accelerate over 70 it will settle down you can try separating the drive shaft and front universal joint or CV joint roll the truck a little you want the joint to move 180 so don't put back same place mark drive shat and joint or buy new CV or universal joint and be done
