transmission sometimes doesn't want to shift from 2nd to 3rd

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.2 engine.  about 1/3 of the time the transmission
won't shift into 3rd.  If I shift into neutral and back to drive then it will shift.  It doesn't slip.

If I not mistaken yours has electric shift solenoids in the trans pan. Possibly one going bad. Also check wire harness for good connection at trans.
