Does the distributor sit snug down? Some distributors can be put in backwards, so your 180 degrees off. Make sure when the # 1 plug should fire, your at TDC "top dead center" on the # 1 piston. You can pull the valve cover off and watch the intake valve open. Your distributor should have the rotor at or near the # 1 plug wire. Make sure when you rotate the engine trying to start it, there is spark at the plugs. I would really make sure the distributor is in correctly and the timing is set at or near where it should be. A timing light also may be a help if your getting spark to the plugs.
