Trac Off light

My trac off light comes on and then the transmission won't shift out of low gear on my automatic car. Does anyone know what might cause this? I have no idea why the light even comes on at all!

It also has a little smoke coming out could it be the motor

I just had this problem. It turns out that the parking brake was pulled one notch on. lol
