More than likely what is happening is this.Your in tank fuel pump is going out.Its getting stuck and not spinning. So it must be replaced. When you try to start it and you don't here the pump, try this .Use a hammer or tire tool and hit the bottom of the gas tank. This may shake the pump allowing it to spin. To replace the pump unbolt the bed of the truck and have a helper lift the bed on to the rear wheels. This will give you more than enough room to replace the pump without dropping the tank.Having the tank empty isn't needed.
