Failed emissions test

Asked by Sparky19 Apr 07, 2017 at 12:11 PM about the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I failed the emissions test with code P0442. I
understand this is an evap problem but my check
engine light never came on. It's an older car but all
the dash lights seem to be working. Does this
narrow down what the problem may be? Hoping it's
nothing more than a new gas cap. Thanks.

could be or a hose/line on the evap canister system at the gas tank.

The system is picking up an evap. system leak. Usually rust is the cause- from fill tube to vent tube to tank etc. Occasionally a visual inspection reveals a problem. Other times a Smoke Test is required to diagnose.
