Cold air intake for 1997 Chevrolet s10

Ok So I've been researching some way to add some power to my 4.3 Liter V6 Vortec. And I Found that putting a cold air intake add around 6 horsepower and the intakes run around 60-100 bucks. I really want too do this but will this run my engine? It allows more air into it so I was wondering if it will throw anything off, like air to fuel ratio, or starve it of gas. Any Information would be awesome.

I generally advise against these set ups. The air intake system on your truck is already a cold air intake system in that there is not a thermostatically controlled air cleaner like was used years ago. The throttle body is warmed by a small coolant passage that goes around the throttle body to prevent throttle body icing in cool/damp weather. Also, the oil used for the air filter on these will often contaminate the mass airflow sensor, if equipped, and the intake air temperature sensor. It will not upset the air/fuel mixture because the computer is constantly monitoring and adjusting that from information it receives from the upstream oxygen sensor. It maintains a 14 to 1 ratio under all conditions once the engine is warmed up and in closed loop operation. HTH. -Jim

Ok thanks. Is there any other cheap options to help increace power that you would know of?

And also, Oh the MAF sensor, I took the screen off to help increase air flow, and it made a big difference in power and added acceleration. Would that do any long term damge removing that screen? I still have it so I can put it back on

Personally I'd leave the screen on. It's there to help keep the sensor clean. HTH. -Jim


I hate to burst your bubble but there isn't a good way to add power to a 4.3 without doing some heavy engine mods. All the tricks you read on the Internet like the maf screen and removing the baffle on the throttle blade will just affect throttle response. Gm couldn't increase the power of the 4.3 until the end of its run in the late 2000's. The 4.3 is a good motor nut the best way to make more power is to do a motor swap.
