The "battery light" is somewhat misleading. It is really saying "your battery is going to be fully discharged pretty soon" because the alternator is not working. Have your alternator tested first. If you replace it, recharge your battery before you drive it so the new alternator doesn't have to work so hard.
The battery light on the dash stays on.
