Problems idling, accelerating and backfiring

Asked by Jul 13, 2017 at 10:27 PM about the 1995 Chevrolet S-10 2 Dr LS Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 S10 4.3 that has been having trouble accelerating and
backfiring for a few months now and only seems to be getting worse. At cold
start the engine will crank way more than normal, once started the idle will
fluctuate and surge up to about ~900 rpm and in rare cases over 1000.
When put in gear the truck will often stall (directly after cold start). Once in
drive very minimal throttle is all it can take and if given too much the truck will
lose all power and backfires. If given a lot of throttle, after a backfire it will
eventually catch and the rpm's will shoot to where they should be at
according to the throttle position but there's still very minimal power and the
truck goes no where. Fuel system failures are the only thing that came to my
mind as I'm no expert so I replaced the fuel filter, tested the injectors to see if
the solenoid was clicking (they were), and cleaned the EGR valve. The last
thing I can think of is the fuel pump is failing but I wanted to make sure there
aren't any other options I can test before I drop a bunch of money on
testing/replacing a fuel pump.

Thank you
