Can the engine from a 2007 non-hybrid be
used in a 2006 hybrid? Compatible or not?

The answer is "No." The hybrid 2.3 Duratec engine is different than the non-hybrid one. They are not swappable. You can tell a Hybrid 2.3 Duratec by the VIN number. On the hybrid engines, the 8th digit is always "H".
