Cold Tranmission won't go into drive

Asked by csemas Dec 19, 2016 at 10:16 AM about the 1992 Ford F-350 4 Dr XLT Lariat Crew Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1992 Ford F-350 with a 7.3L diese, automatic transl. When truck is cold transmission will not go into forward gears.  Reverse gear works fine.  If I let truck warm up or hold engine at increased RPM's it will take a couple minute and transmission will engage. After truck is warmed up this problem no longer occurs.

you have rubber bands on the inside of your tranny.when its cold they get hard and shrink.after tranny fluid heats up. the band swells back up causing it to catch especially on older vehicles. my advice let it warm up.band is old and has stretched out over the years
