Not enough cranking amps

I just bought two new batteries for my 91 f250 with
the 7.3 in it. Both of my batteries are rated at 650
cca and when I try to start it theirs a slow click and
the volts bairley read on the gauge. if anyone has
any ideas it would be much appreciated because
I'm stumped on this one.

Are these the batteries someone recommended for you? These cca seem a bit low for a 7.3, I think the batteries rating is too small.

ya its what autozone recommended for it. I talked to a guy where im at and hes running 600cca. Also when I went to start it yesterday it started smoking where the main negative cable connects to the block.

Ok then, you should go threw and clean, scrape all the battery cable ends, and if you see any corrosion under the wiring insulation, replace with new. Sounds like some bad connections. But still, just for my Chevy 350 I always get at least 750 cca battery.

Perform a starter voltage drop test.. bad ground or very high resistance in a cable...Old vehicle very common issue.

Check the ground wire that goes from the firewall or fender to the block ( engine)
