Experiencing series of 5 sets of 5 long beeps with no warning lights on 2004 Super Cab.

Asked by RevJMyers Nov 21, 2014 at 11:16 AM about the 2004 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just driving down the road I am getting a series of 5 long beeps (about 1 second long
each) repeated four more times (for a total of 5 sets). There are no warning or alert
lights illuminated on the dash. All the guages read OK. It's just me, no passenger. I
have my seat belt on. I have been having the airbag light coming on while driving for
over a year now, but not all the time. It comes and goes, sometimes staying on for long
periods, other times not being on at all. I don't think that's related, but don't know. This
beeping has just started in the last month. Took it to one non-dealer service center
thinking they could plug up their computer and see what was causing it. Writer said
that "a warning light has to come on for it to leave a code" for the computer to find.
Best he could do was offer to keep it for a while, try to duplicate the problem and get it
hooked up to the computer while it was happening. I saw lots of $$$$ in his eyes, so
didn't bite. Anybody got any ideas? You think a dealer would be the better place to go?

crumbob: last service was 10 weeks ago, LOF, top off fluids, etc.; also had front brakes replaced including rotors. None of the parts that you mention that I know of. Checked under hood and everything looks OK and sounds OK. Checked tightness of caps, etc.

crumbob: well, you just may have hit it! I did not know this vehicle has TPMS. And, yes, my tire pressure/s have been low, with left front showing it, so this morning I had all tires aired up to standard (left front was down to 23 PSI). Did not experience the warning beeps in a couple short trips after that today. Will see how it goes. So the TPMS on this vehicle would have warning beeps but no warning lights? ( I have not had a chance since your answer to look into the user manual for TPMS.)

Ford finally placed a little light on the dash which looks like a tire which glows and rings when one of the tires are low. On the 2010 it takes about 20 miles of driving before it goes off.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. Airing up tires to the proper PSI seems to have solved the issue. Apparently this 2004 vehicle has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System of some kind. However, there is no indication of this in the owners manual I received, not the manual kindly referenced in crumbob's answer above, not even an indicator light on the various dashes in either manual. (If it makes any difference, my vehicle was made early in the model year, October 2003). I am happy to know it has it, with the only indication of it being in use the beeps described in my original question. Again, thanks to all, especially crumbob.

Rev: Keep in mind the sensor can either be on the valve stem or mounted on the metal wheel. If you use the spare you may set off the warning again because the manufacturers do not place a sensor on the spare. At least by 2010 F 150 didn't come with one. Find out next time you purchase tires if it on the stem or on the wheel itself.

Check your airbag light in your gauge cluster. From what I hear, it is an audible alert because the light (visual alert) is out. I still don't know how to fix it.

5 beeps means that the AIRBAG lamp is not working in gauge cluster!! (Not to be confused with an airbag problem) If the lamp doesn’t work, then the vehicle has no way of alerting you if their becomes an issue with actual airbag. So, the 5 beeps means “fix the airbag indicator lamp”. You can verify this. Here’s how: Turn your key ON and look at instrument cluster. All lamps ‘should’ light up (including airbag lamp). If not, you will get an ‘audible alarm’ (5 beeps).

I have a 1999 Expedition with 288,000 miles. It just started with this "5 beeps x 5" last month. Maybe a "spike" in the electrical system?

I have a 2008 ford f150 and the airbag light comes on in the cluster when I turn my truck on also I have a bulldog and he sits in the front and the passenger airbag light comes on when the seatbelt is not in use. My tire pressure light was acting up a few years ago so i'm hoping its just my tires that need to be filled up. If anyone has any other ideas as to what it could be let me know! I drive to and from work for 30 minutes every day and i'm getting sick of the noise :(

I replaced my airbag cluster and it still beeps. I've taken it to 2 mechanics and I've gone to 3 different auto parts stores and no one knows. So I guess the airbag cluster doesn't fix it for everyone.

I just solved this by replacing the incandescent bulb lighting the "passenger airbag off" indicator just above the radio with an LED and series resistor. While troubleshooting this, I discovered that a 2.2K ohm resistor in place of the bulb also works.
