02 Impala Reving sound

Asked by Rodney Feb 17, 2017 at 03:43 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Impala FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

As I drive above 40mph I notice my 02 impala making a
revving sound and if I'm holding my foot on the
accelerator even when I release the accelerator. The
speed doesn't pick up but it sounds as if I'm still pressing
down on the gas pedal. The sound is constant and slowly
goes away as I reach speeds under 40mph. Does any
know what it could be and if it will cause any major
damage? The vehicle runs perfect otherwise and there is
no check engine light on.

You can watch your tack to verify that the engine is actually revving when you say it does this. If it were revving up you would see the tack register more rpms. Otherwise is it possible there is a hole in the exhaust?

Correct. It isn't revving up or accelerating it just sounds like it is revving up. It's like the sound when you press on the gas while the car is in park. I'll check the exhaust for holes. Is there anything else you think of that it could be?

No, but when looking at the exhaust, look for black marks, it would be what the inside of the tail pipe looks like. That would be an indication of a exhaust leak. Check the seams, and around the catalytic converter and muffler. Look at the exhaust manifold on the engine, where it is bolted on also.
