the dreaded ford tick/knock that haunts me for ever

I don't know the exact noise you have but, it's possible you have broken valve springs, sometimes they break in half and spin creating a similar noise as the engine is running. Also broken valve followers can cause this noise as the Rollers sometimes ware out where it spins and contacts the cam, or where it contacts the top of the valve or lifter, also check that you have good oil pressaure or try a thicker oil or oil stabilizer

thank you both for your input, the 03 4.6l doesnt have cam phasers thank god ,one less thing to check. as for the valves ya thats what I was thinking because there is nothing else along side of the head under the intake ,but the valves? with the hose stuffed down there its really easy to hear it knocking, just removed valve cover again to check and everything looks and feels fine,cam an lifters. cant tell about the springs,rockers all good??? its a good solid sound not just a faint ticking. Do you think the valves would make that much noise?? Thanks for taking the time to give your thoughts...ozzie
