2001 Ford F-150 won't engage starter, all electrical comes on when ignition switch is engaged

Asked by Wayne Dec 21, 2014 at 07:22 AM about the 2001 Ford F-150 XLT Crew Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drove to a store yesterday everything was running fine and then I went to leave the store and turned the ignition, everything cam on but the starter would not engage. All gauges came up tried to jump the battery still nothing.
There were no signs of any difficulty starting the truck before no hard cranks nothing!
I had to get it towed to a shop but was wondering if it was something I could fix as well.
I checked the fuses but not the relays. I thought it maybe a relay, starter, soleniod or maybe the starter cable busted or rusted off. It was getting dark so anything was hard to see.

Check the power block that is mounted to the firewall behind the battery, The positive battery cable will be running into this block. If you pull the cover off, you will see a big fuse that the positive cable attaches to, check to see that you have poer on both sides of that fuse.

Have what appears to be the same problem, IF I wiggle the key in the ignition turning it back and forth sometimes it finally works and starts the truck but what appears to work more often is to take the truck out of Park and back . If I do this a few times I can finally get the truck to start. Something appears to be loose in the electronics associated with the ignition and gear shift column in the truck, What is the fix? I just put up with it now but sooner or later I assume it will not work at all.
