2001 F150 engine dies for no apparent reason. Going down the highway everything is fine, then engine starts misfiring, strong metallic smell from the engine compartment like it's running really lean. After about 15 - 45 minutes later, engine starts up again and is running fine for a few days then starts acting up all over again. Any thoughts?

Don't know if this will help, but here it goes. Back in the early 70's I had a 70's model Grand Torino Sport with a big engine and all the bells and whistles. It began doing the exact same thing. At the time there was a "power pack" bolted to the firewall over the wheel on the dirvers side. When it became overheated the same thing would happen. It would even die on the road. Once cooled, it would start up and run great until it overheated again. Somebody I knew was a mechanic and he suggested I take a gallon jug of water and pour it over the module if it does it again. If it starts up, then the pricey module is bad. Tried it and it worked. I would assume Ford does not use the same power module thirty years later, but the problem does seem related to overheating and electrical issues. Hope it helps.
