Tranny is in neutral, gear lever is stuck in park and cannot start engine

Asked by Renie Jul 04, 2016 at 03:56 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer Xtreme 2-Door RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I came to a stop, put the shifter in park. The shifter seemed to just flop
forward, I did not feel any gear change. When I took my foot off of the brake,
the car rolled like it was in neutral. The shifter was locked in park. I had to
shut off the engine to go get some help. Now the enging won't turn over as
the tranny is not in park.... what do I do?

Sounds like the shifter has become disconnected between it and the transmission. You will probably have to have it towed to a shop that can do the repair. If you are able, you may be able to spot the problem yourself since the likely disconnect is at either end of the linkage (the shifter end or the trans end). If you are not comfortable poking around the underside of your car, I suggest you call in the cavalry!

X2 shift cable has broke. They like to right before the shift lever on the trans. Someone mechanically inclined could get under it and shift it manually but don't do it if your not comfortable with it or you could get run over by your own truck. Being an extreme it may be difficult to get under without a jack anyway
