96 f150 gear selector not engaging

Asked by Ryan999999 Dec 11, 2017 at 05:07 PM about the 1996 Ford F-150 XLT LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 96 f-150 2wd inline 6 with airbag and
no tit. My gear selector when taken out of
park will not engage any other gears. The
gear selector at first was very sloppy but I
found a broken bracket on the shift
selector tube and fixed it. While it no
longer is sloppy it still will not engage the
gears. I found the two torques head bolts
that commonly come loose but they are
good. Shift linkage cable seems to be fine.
I can go under the truck and shift the
transmission by hand and drive all day. So
the transmission itself is good. The issue is
somewhere in the column. Anyone had this
problem or any good ideas? I've watched
as many videos on YouTube as I can and
none of them seem to help. Thanks for any
help!

While you're under the vehicle have someone shift through the gears while you watch the movement of the linkage. If the linkage is moving, but not fully entering the gear, you will have to make an adjustment on the linkage.
