Ford F-150 whines when try to start but won't start

Asked by MzMoore Oct 22, 2015 at 06:02 PM about the 1996 Ford F-150 XL 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When drive truck and stop, it may not start.  After it sits for 10-20 minutes it
will crank over and start.  Today, after sitting for over an hour, it would not
start at all, all it would do is whine.

Sounds like the starter is not engaging. If so you need a new starter.

If the engine does not spin, but the starter is whining then the gear which engages the flywheel is not being forced out. In my younger days (on 50's and 60's model vehicles) is was usually a bendix spring problem.

Now they have a solenoid. You might be able to just replace that but I would just get a new starter.
