Power Window does not stop when it reaches the top if I continue to hold the switch.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

If I continue to hold switch on the driver's side power window, it continues to
run and jumps up and down after it has reached the top. It did not used to do
this. It used to go up and stop even if I held the switch. Likewise, it would go
down and stop. As time goes on, I am having to physically help the window
come up. The passenger side works fine. Is the problem the motor?

The limit switch on the window motor has gone bad, You will need a new window motor.

If, when you grasp the glass, and pull up while pressing the button, the window works, the window motor/actuator is shot. Not a difficult replacement. A DYI'er can to it. The window regulator is probably about 80 bucks or so. You'll need a drill with a small bit to remove the rivets holding the motor in. Replace with half inch screws inserted from the rear as to not interfere with the movement of the window.

I do not believe there are limit switches on power window motors. The motor has an internal shut off switch that stops the motor whenever it hits any substantial restriction! The motor will shut off whenever it reaches a physical stop, or full up or down. This is a safety issue. The same will happen if someone has their arm or head in the window and someone closes it! If your motor does not stop when it reaches full up or down, then the gearing inside the motor has failed and the motor will not stop as it senses no restriction to do so! It will run on and on until you stop it by depressing the window switch in the opposite direction! On Fords, there are round plastic cylinder "plugs" in the gear drive. They are a known failure mode. They can be replaced. Dorman HELP pn 74410 $8 at most auto parts stores!
