Is it my transfer case or the transmission?

I just acquired a 94 model F150 XLT which was stuck in 4 lo. I managed to fix the fact
it wouldn t shift through the 4WD at the shifter but when I get it into 4 Hi it is OK until
you try to go up through the gears. It seems to just disconnect from the transmission
itself (doesn t make a noise like its fallen out of gear, just revs and doesn t bite). I can
go through the gears in 4 lo so I don t understand what the problem is. Is it a transfer
case issue or a transmission issue... Any ideas/information would be much
appreciated.

Have all the linkages checked for movement while under the vehicle with someone inside and the vehicle off. Put wheel chocks around the wheels and then you can go through to make sure its shifting properly. Sounds like the mechanical linkages are not working or moving properly.

Iv'e had the same problem in my 86' Bronco! Although it was the opposite of your problem. My problem was with 4lo, it would "disconnect" when I gave it gas up a hill! Turned out to be the linkage needed adjusting it was binding....

Linkages very commonly come loose on some vehicles. Sometimes the brackets rust or come loose also. If the brackets rust out, the same thing. Considering how much dirt, debris and moisture easily and quickly cover everything underneath a car as it drives down a road or goes off road, there's no wonder things come loose and break or stop working properly.
