Get the engine computer trouble codes read. This is usually a free service at most auto supply stores. You may have a bad O2 sensor or other issue.

You would have trouble finding someone to read the trouble codes since that is a OBD1 computer in there. What kind of smell? Oil? I would start by checking the compression of the engine.
