NOT TYPE F!! The sure fire way to know is to read the dip stick. It is normally on there. If not, the owner's manual will tell you. Most Ford transmissions built after 1983 (the AOD) take Mercon. The C-4, FMX, C-6, and Ford-O-Matic took Type F. Fords with recirculating ball steering use Type F as the steering fluid as well.
