Starter

Asked by Martin May 23, 2013 at 06:12 PM about the 1990 Ford F-150 S LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1990 F-150 with a 1996 6 cyl 4.9L engine and i need to replace the starter. I
pulled the old one out and it was the factory 1990 starter so i went ahead and just got a
1990 starter but it wont fit properly into the hole. Will the 96 starter be compatible or is
there something else that i should do for the 90 starter to fit in properly?

if you got a re manufactured starter sometimes they are different from factory parts due to cheap or faulty cores. if you can still get or still have the old starter just have it rebuilt, it is a lot cheaper than buying one but just as good. that way you know it will work and fit

Could be the wrong starter, a starter for a different flywheel...people give the wrong parts all the time. Try another one.

Agreed although usually - not always - Ford starters are kinda universal. And parts people don't know the difference off the shelf - only what the computer listing tells them.
