Ford Club Wagon Loses Power

Asked by Andrew May 16, 2019 at 06:12 AM about the 1995 Ford E-Series E-150 Chateau Club Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Older (1995) but low mileage (72k) Club
Wagon van won’t accelerate after engine has
been running (driving or idling) for a while.
Seems to be electrical/on board issue rather
than mechanical because:
- it doesn’t always happen,
- when engine is shut off and restarted,
everything works fine,
- we replaced all spark plugs.

Other symptoms include:
- it seems to happen more frequently when
weather is warm,
- it seems to happen more when gas gets to
1/4 tank or lower,
- it sometimes happens if I have to stop or
slow down and then quickly accelerate again,
- if quick acceleration is attempted, engine
lurches and makes a “knocking” sound.

Please help! It is extremely frustrating and
makes an otherwise-great vehicle unreliable.

I have the same trouble on my e-150, club wagon 1986! It happens during warm weather even if the tank is full. We had to be towed yesterday because we were on a highway when it happened. I changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump (on the front line) and it's still there. My mechanic doesn't know what it could be and he wants to drive it when the trouble is there but, so far, it hasn't happened when he is there... And you, have you found any answers? Luc

I did not resolve the issue before selling the vehicle. Someone did suggest changing the PCV tube, but I never got around to it.
