stuck in 1st gear

Asked by Jun 05, 2017 at 05:41 PM about the 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 350

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

shifter issues, you can put the car in drive and take off but it is stuck in first and won't shift to 2nd gear. i can't shift it back into park when parked and so i override it by sticking a pencil in the hole at the bottom of the shifter or i shut the car off and then i can shift it back into park. the little white box on the dash which tells u which gear you're in is blank all the time. i think its something simple because the car is in mint condition with low miles. my brake lights do work. someone told me its the brake light switch or shifter solenoid? please help me. engine light is on too and i have not had that checked yet. thank you
