Why does my temp. gauge climb to 120 celsius while stopped or moving slowly?

my 94 E320 works almost flawlessly but my temp gauge needle climbs to 120 celsius while stopped or moving at a slow rate, but when im coasting down the highway its right above 80 celsuis, what do you recommend i check first?

I may be way off base but check to se if your cooling fan for the radiator is working properly. Some fans are belt driven connected to a fan clutch and an easy check is to wiggle the fan blade ( with the engine off ). If it is loose when you wiggle it you most likely need to replace the fan blade clutch. I'm not sure if your car has tis type of cooler or if it a sensor controlled cooler. At any rate when the car is moving you get natural air flow through the radiator which helps to keep the coolant from overheating. When you stop you stop the air flow and this is where the cooling fan is supposed to pick-up, so I would start with checking the fan and also the coolant level.
if not, leave it at idle, parked, running, thermostat may be sticking, or water pump about to go., while moving, the air is keeping it cool, i have done many water pumps for the older E-class lately
