Did my breaks malfunction?

The car in front of me hit their breaks and when I
hit mine I still ended up rear ending them, I suspect
my breaks were faulty. My car got wrecked and as I
was getting it on a tow truck I noticed a PVC pipe
lodged between metal parts right by the back left
tire (no one could get it out). Parralel to it
approximately 10 inches to the left of the tire.
Is this part of the break system that the PVC was
lodged in?

That piece of PVC has nothing to do with the "BRAKES" or your vehicle. It probably was run over, bounced and lodged in the bottom of the vehicle. It is possible that the piece of PVC damaged the brake system when it was run over if it struck a brake line or brake hose. Did you check the brake fluid level?
