Replace engine or replace truck
Asked by Blaize Jun 08, 2018 at 03:29 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I've got a 2004 Chevy avalanche with 195,000
miles on it. It still runs and works well but I know
for most trucks 200,000 miles is about the general
life you can get out of a truck. I know the engine
and transmission will set me back around 10,000
dollars and I hope to try to get another 10 to 15
years out of it. So if I get the transmission and
engine replaced when they go bad, is that a
feasible goal or am I better off saving the money
and upgrading to a newer truck?

This is entirely up to you. The truck could go for a long, long time if it runs good now and does not use oil. The transmission would be the first thing to go in my estimation. At that point you will have to evaluate the situation as your view of the truck may change over the miles. My Ford has 198,000 on it and I see no reason that it cannot go to 300.000.
I have a 2003 avalanche with 295,000 miles on it. Replaced transmission in 2016.It still looks and runs nice. Expect to get 400,00 miles out of it. Of course that's mostly highway miles
