how to fix the play in the rear wheel of 97 toyota tercel

Asked by ruthlessryeipa Feb 24, 2015 at 05:47 PM about the 1997 Toyota Tercel 2 Dr CE Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

just replaced the rear wheel bearings when jacked up i can grab the wheel and wiggle it
back and forth. Is that normal? How do I fix that. I have tried tightening the axle nut but
when I drive the car the nut backs off a little

No that's not normal. Possibly the bearings were installed wrong, backwards if that's even possible, not all the way on spindle, wrong bearings. The axle spindle nut torque spec is 166 ft/lbs, and that's TIGHT. Then it has a retainer and cotter pin so it won't back off like yours ids doing

https://estore.nordiques.com/uploads/nordiques/files/09-torquesskf.pdf TAF Tighten adjusting nut to 22 ft-lbs/29 Nm while rotating wheel. Back off to 0. Tighten adjusting nut until 0-2.6 lbs/0-1.2 kg of force is required to turn hub with a spring scale attached to a lug stud.
