Trouble With Starting

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Engine would not start (knocking sound - different than sound when battery low)
Knocking sound came from starter
Measured battery with own meter and was OK
Took battery to auto parts store who also said battery was "100%"
Measured charging system (alternator) with own meter and was OK
Replaced starter with one that was remanufactured
Engine started first time and several times subsequently
Let sit overnight and tried starting again in morning.  Brief pause when turning key before engine turned over (sounded like low power).  All lights at normal brightness; nothing seemed out-of-the-ordinary in terms of power.  Two subsequent attempts resulted in successful starts with less lag time.
Was thinking there could be a slow drain on battery.  Maybe remanufactured started has internal short?  Or during replacement the power lines somehow come in contact with heat shield thus draining battery (?).  Any thoughts?  Much appreciated!

try and start the car with the head lights on... tell what it does>do the headlights just get a little dimmer or dim 50%??

Does it indicate a problem with the battery if the lights dim appreciably?

yes a battery can sow 12.5 volts yet be bad..if it cant hold a voltage 10,11 12 volts...when you give it a massive load (turning the starter) batter is no good..

After sitting for 10 hours I measured the battery at 10.9V. When starting it went down to 7.9V; it started with some reluctance. Also, headlights went completely out. While running, the battery voltage went up to 14.5V, indicating the alternator was charging. Replaced the battery and so far so good.
