Rav98, full tank getting me 300k. What's happening?

Asked by May 13, 2018 at 11:29 PM about the 1998 Toyota RAV4 4 Door

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

December: Engine overheated, hose burst. Bob, replaced hose.
December: A week later, overheated
December: Car got serviced, mentioned overheating issues.
December: Car Engine overheated again. engine noisier but car ran normally.
March: Engine noisy, overheated and died on the road.
March: Leak found, constantly had to refill radiator
April: Leak found in water pump, pump replaced by Bob. Bob said engine overheated to the point where engine just stopped (Really bad?) Timing belt was stretched. Believes disks in engine could be out of alignment, adding to noise. The engine is being held shut with wire, partially open, adding to noise.
April: Engine noisier, no longer overheating, fuel consumption went from 23mp to 12.38mpg

First car, new driver. I've accepted the engine noise but the fuel consumption is new. Opinions on what could be causing it? and what I should do? Bob suggested a new engine, he is suprised that the car is still running.
