try to turn engine over and it sounds like the motor has a hard knock sound
and won't try to start.  Truck was turned on side in wreck

A hard knock is probably a rod knock. Being on its side may have allowed the engine to run without oil to the oil pump pickup.

Sounds like you are in for an engine rebuild. Do not try to start it anymore until you have it checked out. Have it towed to an engine rebuilder as soon as you can.

In case i missed something; did the engine die when it was turned over or run for a bit then die? Asking that i bought a 22r engine that had been turned over and oil had gotten on 2 pistons( number 1 and 4 if i remember correctly) and it sounded like it had a bad knock trying to turn over. Drained the oil off, put in 2 oil firing plugs and it fired off. It smoked like something you've never saw for about 20 minutes then it ran for about 78,0000 miles.Try simple things first.

Thanks for all the replies, I put the throttle body breather back on and the truck cranked up and is running great, unlike Fords, Chevys, etc - must have throttle body breather on for toyota s to run.
