Asked by Christine Feb 11, 2014 at 01:25 PM about the 2003 Toyota Matrix XR

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 toyota matrix that once you hit 45 - 50 begins to rev up over 4. What could this mean?

Does it rev as youre accelerating or if you just cruising at constant speed of 45 to 50 it just randomly revvs up and down? if you have an XRS, the vvtl-i engines have whats called "lift" which in effect is similar to hondas "vtec". is esentially an extra boost of power at higher rpms. not sure how it works but if it happens while youre accelerating and suddenly accelerates faster and rpms go up, its most likely the "lift" kicking in.
