buying from private seller out of state
I'm interested in buying from a private party on CarGurus. I live in California,
and the seller lives in Colorado. Can I get temporary plates in Colorado to
drive it out and register it in California? What is the process for that in
Just buy the car and drive it on Colorado plates. If no plates, drive it that way and keep your sales receipt in case you're stopped, which won't happen in California. This in undue worry.
If you buy a 49 state car you CANNOT register it in California.
Good point, FOR! In California, we had pollution control standards that exceeded those of all other states. Around 2009, Federal standards were raised for all states to ours. Look under the hood to see a plaque that says it meets California standards (CARB). If it's not there, it will not meet our smog tests without alterations, which could mean alteration of the exhaust system and replacement of the oxygen sensor (I think that's all). In fact, all 2001 Toyotas were built to California standards.
