headlights don't turn off

battery was too week to start car.  Light switch was on auto. Turned car off but headlights stayed on. Disconnected battery and heard a click. Reconnected and lights were off.   Unsure whats going on

Headlight relay contacts are probably "welded" together from wear ... Pull the relay out and get a jump to start engine and recharge battery ... then plug relay back in to seee if the lights stay off/on Relay contacts on High current loads ,,arc and over a period of time develop resistance /// causing heat resulting in failure
