I need to replace the engine. It is an automatic transmission. Do I need same year engine? or can I get a newer year engine and even from a manual transmission??

I need to replace the engine. It is an automatic transmission. Do I need same
year engine? or can I get a newer year engine and even from a manual
transmission?? Its a Toyota Echo 2001 automatic.

Why? Does the car mean that much to you? It's worth nothing at this point, putting money and effort to replace the engine will far exceed the value of the vehicle.
