2001 Corolla Rack and Pinion

Asked by Jun 30, 2017 at 05:38 PM about the 2001 Toyota Corolla LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The place that works on my car says that I have a leak in the rack and pinion joint and the only way to deal with it is to replace the entire assembly ($1200). They said it is the power steering fluid that is leaking. I don't see any leaks under the car when it is parked so I'm suspicious I'm being scammed. It seems to me I could check the reservoir and see if, over time, it is going down. Is that right? So where is the reservoir and how does the cap come off? It was really obvious and simple in my 74 Toyota but this engine space is more complex.

Kind of an expensive quote. If the rack is leaking it usually leaks from the seals that are covered by the rubber boots. I'd get a second opinion from another shop.
