Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1995 Toyota Corolla. Has been great. Recently and intermitently the engine revs high - I'll be driving at the 45mph speed limit - engine revs like it has moved into a higher gear then it will, after a time, kick into a high gear; but then when I attempt to stop... it continues to stay in the higher gear and not shift down. Very unnerving. When it does sometimes rev upon increasing speed and the gear not automatically shifting up... the "O/D Off" light comes on. A couple of times - I've started to drive in the morning and the car is moving the engine is reving and the speedometer is at "0"... eek! My car is at 168,000 miles, looks great... have replaced alternator, belts, brakes, tires... I'm hoping this is a fairly inexpensive repair... Any suggestions would be great since I'm hoping to have a job within a few weeks... which is - of all things - B2B sales... yikes!  Thanks for any suggestions or insights! ~N

Sounds like the VSS(Vehicle speed sensor) is bad or has a short etc. Since the car cannot see what speed the vehicle is traveling the transmission computer has a hard to figuring out what to do.

Sorry I have no better advice than David....he makes sense. It just made me think of Aamco's ads... "Half the carts brought to us do not need a new transmission"...I read in to that "half the cars brought to us we hit you up for a new transmission"
