1993 GEO PRIZM 1.8L Lsi (TOYOTA Eng/trans) SHIFTING/SPEEDO ISSUES / NEW VSS
Hoping the luminaries here can help me. 1993 GEO PRIZM 1.8L LSi, 85K orig miles (bought it new). Has TOYOTA engine & drivetrain. 4spd AT: A245E | Engine: 1.8 7A-F. Mechanical pointer gauges: speedometer & tachometer. Mechanical odometer. Electrical glitches since Sears Auto replaced alternator in late 1990's, e.g., ABS and Airbag lights stay on while driving. Over time, car developed some of the symptoms of gmvalentine's Toyota Camry. Harsh shifting. Sporadically fails to shift up from starting gear. Sporadic engine light. Speedo pointer dead, but springs to life at highway speeds. Tachometer slowly died; finally odometer died, too. Cruise control stopped working. Obtained code (via paperclip method); flashed 42 for VSS. Replaced VSS on trans body. Odometer started working. Cruise control, too. But same chronic shifting problems. Same speedo issues-- dead except at highway speeds. Tachometer dead, too. Transmission mechanic says instrument cluster is problem, but can't find used part. QUESTION: WILL A WORKING INSTRUMENT / SPEEDO CLUSTER FIX THE PROBLEM? ANY comments or guidance welcome. THANKS!
