First let me say, in my experience, it is NOT common for a Toyota of that age to have transmission failure at 100k miles. My wife's 1990 Camry had 250k miles on the original transmission when we sold it, and even though it would no longer shift into 4th gear, it still drove and ran just fine. That said, being in Alaska, you may have to have something shipped in. You might see what local parts stores stock Jasper remanufactured transmissions, or you might have a reputable local shop rebuild it for you -- which should be cheaper. I would ask for a second opinion, without knowing what the symptoms are, perhaps it is just something that can be fixed without replacing the transmission -- a valve body comes to mind, or a torque convertor. Other than that, you might try junkyards, but Toyota parts are rare as hen's teeth in my area in southern PA, so I can imagine Alaska would be a lot tougher.
