Is the dashboard light supposed to be on during daytime?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2004 Camry used so I don't know if it's normal for the dashboard light to be off
during daytime. It's on at night when the headlights are turned on. Only the "P R N D"
lights are on. Thank you.

On the old Camrys they had the dash light dimmer switch. You could adjust the brightness of the dash lights. Look for a knob with the pic of a light bulb on it. Not sure if the newer models still have it. As long as the lights aren't staying on after the car is shut off, I wouldn't worry about it. If they are staying on when car is shut off, it will kill your battery.

Thanks Reelin68. I already adjusted the dimmer to the max but I still don't see any lights. The only time I see any lights is when I have the headlights on. So I don't know if that's normal. My mom's 2006 camry instrument panel is lid during daytime and turns dimmer when headlights are turned on. Mine is not lid at all when the headlights are off, it's only on when the headlights are on.

They should be on with headlights off, and not even dimmable. (is that a word?) Dimmer only works with headlights on.

If they only turn on with the lights, then I would say that it's normal for your year. I think my '99 Camry only comes on with the lights also.

My Corolla has them ON whenever headlights are OFF, and not adjustable. Just seems Camry would be same, or it would be hard to see gauges in daytime ...don't know that for fact, just saying how my car is

Abirules123, have you tried to increase the brightness with the dimmer switch? There should be a switch by the left of your steering wheel. Has a picture of a light bulb on it. Turn it and see if the dash lights get brighter.
