replace egnition barrel in 2002 camry

Hello,
I'm down to one good key for my 2002 Camry, and it can be pulled out of
the ignition at any setting (obviously not good). I thought after looking at a
few Youtube videos I could replace the cylinder and of course get two new
keys that come with it. HOWEVER: I've been told the existing key has a
chip in the plastic, and I can't simply replace the cylinder as the chip in the
new keps won't match the chip in the car's ignition. Is this true? If so, how
do I get around what might be an expensive repair?

Just go to a dealer, they can help with both lock & key to match.

Could you provide some history concerning this issue? What was the original problem?
I don't care much about Toyota, I just know what to do when something needs to be fixed. So I wouldn't know....Sorry.
I believe most hardware stores that make keys now have computer software to reprogram a freshly cut key. They take your old worn out key and allow the software to read the chip in that old key. They then transfer that code in the old chip and install it into your new key(s). I went through this process a while ago using a local ACE hardware store. So....when you install the new ignition switch cylinder....the keys that came with that cylinder will not start your vehicle. Those new keys need to be reprogramed. A Toyota Dealer could handle this process nicely..as noted above....for a price. They should be able to quote a price over the phone.
